University Instructor and Council Member

I am running for reelection as a progressive advocate for affordable housing and neighborhood health/quality of life, who brings an environmental, social, and racial justice lens to the Council. I’ve been lucky to call Santa Cruz my home for 30 years. I’ve seen first hand how the status quo is not working for most of us. I will stand up for community values over corporate and developer interests.

I spent many years as a labor/community organizer with the Community Action Board. While receiving my PhD in Geography from Berkeley, my community engaged-research took me from California’s strawberry fields to Latin American banana coops and plantations. My progressive values on labor and land use inform my teaching at San Jose State.

For the past four years I’ve focused on policies to increase the number of affordable housing units in new developments; renter protections; living wage jobs; and critical supportive services for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. In this moment of public health and economic crisis, I will keep fighting for these goals and work to ensure that the city maintains public services.

I have fought for you for four years. I’m asking for four more.
